The museum is housed in the the former Gare d’Orsay (built in 1898-1900), a railway station and hotel (west end of building) in Paris which served as a terminus for the Chemin de Fer de Paris à Orléans (Paris-Orléans Railway).

Architect/Designer: Victor Laloux (1850-1937)
Design: Beaux-Arts

The transformation of the station to a museum began in 1978 and was completed in 1986. The former train station’s concourse became the museum’s central hall. Along both sides of the main hall (the former train shed) are exhibit rooms. This grand hall, was flooded in the Great Flood (Inondation) of Paris in January 1910.
