Rundle Mall in Adelaide, South Australia features interesting and intriguing building facades. One of the edifices which I find fascinating is the Samuel Smith’s Building c.1887 which houses Shops 150-154. It is presently occupied by a juice bar, a hair products retailer and a coffee shop. Whereas in 1936, the three shops in the building were a millinery specialist (Goldring’s), a footware store (Lewis Shoe Co.) and an unemployed sales depot.

The building is an example of Victorian commercial architecture derived from continental European rather than British tradition which is unusual in South Australia. The decorative motifs and extravagant treatment to the facade reminds me of those narrow building facades in Amsterdam.

North Terrace is the premier boulevard in Adelaide and much of the impressive building facades along the avenue have been preserved and remained intact. These majestic edifices never fail to enthrall architecture buffs and captivate photography flâneurs. My favourites are those that line the south side of North Terrace between Gawler Place and King William Street. The following photo montage features four of those buildings [L-R] – Verco Building (1912), Liberal Club Building (1924), Goldsborough House (1935) and Shell House (1931):

Piazza San Marco (St Mark’s Square), 12th-19th century, civic and religious square, architecture: Byzantine to Renaissance. Nearly two football fields long, the plaza is surrounded by the offices of the republic – the Procuratie Vecchie or “old offices” (16th century Renaissance) and the Procuratie Nuove or “new offices” (17th century High Renaissance). Basilica di San Marco (11th century) and the Campanile stand out in the background.
